Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Aikido derives mainly from the martial art of Dait?-ry? Aiki-jutsu or Daito Aiki-j?-jutsu. Aikido formerly known as Aiki-jutsu or Aiki-budo developed exclusively and closed by Prince Teijun (Sadazumi), 6th son of the Emperor Seiwa (Family Genji), Japan. The system began to be formed by Yoshimitsu Minamoto Genji Shinra-Saburo in "Daito palace" which became known as Daito Aikijutsu
The Kai Genji Takeda Family (one of the Samurai local rulers) preserved Daito-Ryu as a secret martial art within the family. Nobody knew even the name of this martial art until Sokaku Takeda Sensei began teaching the art outside of the family in the late 19th century. Sokaku awarded Morihei the Representative Instructor (kyoju dairi) certificate, which entitled him to teach Daito-ryu on Sokaku's behalf. Subsequently, Morihei received the kaishaku sodensho, the highest Daito-ryu certificate at the time.
By studying Daito-Ryu and other martial arts on top of his own ideas Aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba Sensei, who was an excellent student of Sokaku Takeda. Aikido started its dissemination after WWII as a martial art suitable for modern times in terms of spirit and technique. Since 1920, Aikido began promoted by Prof. Morihei Ueshiba and the Aikikai organization he founded the Foundation in 1940. Aikikai Foundation received the legitimacy of the Government of Japan and since then the center of the development of Aikido world. Aikikai Foundation is currently chaired by Moriteru Ueshiba, the 3rd generation of the Ueshiba family.
